Alan Smith’s Five Year Goal Plan

You may be surprised to learn (or possibly not!) that on Tuesday (April 10th) it will mark a very special anniversary for Newcastle United’s Alan Smith.

‘Only’ five years ago Alan Smith scored his last goal, it came in Manchester United’s  7-1 demolition of Roma in a Champions League quarter-final.

A quite unbelievable record, a player who Newcastle United paid around £7m for and a reported £3m+ in wages for each of his five years at St.James’ Park. An ex-striker for Leeds and England, yet he can’t score a goal in five years!

Smith went to MK Dons on loan and their manager welcomed him as somebody to give them an extra attacking dimension….

Well six bookings in only twelve appearances suggest he has certainly not being holding back on his ‘attacking’ instincts.

When it comes to attacking the opposition’s goal though it has been a different story, he has two chances for the MK Dons to notch before his five years is up – with an away match at Preston on Saturday 7th April and at home to Tranmere on Monday 9th.

For me he ranks possibly only second to Michael Owen in terms of being a waste of money for Newcastle United, his desire left at Elland Road and Old Trafford, Newcastle United’s only purpose in making him a very rich man.
