Alan Pardew Surprised By Cissé’s Goals?

In the post-match interviews after Swansea, Alan Pardew was asked if he was surprised at the goalscoring form of Papiss Cissé.

The look on the manager’s face was a classic as he slowly explained that no, he hadn’t been surprised as the striker’s goalscoring record in Germany was outstanding.

I think the only surprise for Alan Pardew is that he has managed to pick up such a quality striker for what is a modern day bargain of a little under £10m.

For the record, Cissé’s stats in Germany are a superb 37 goals in 65 matches for Freiburg, which is all the more impressive when you consider his team were in the Bundesliga relegation zone when Newcastle signed him.

It is a major (pleasant) shock that United didn’t face competition for his signature but it shows how important the judgement is of people like Alan Pardew and Graham Carr when it comes to player recruitment.

Watch this class collection of Cissé’s goals from his time in Germany, you’ll recognise the brilliance even if it isn’t in black & white (or orange!).

I think we have plenty to look forward to in the Newcastle United career of Papiss Cissé.
