£15m For Tim Krul? – They’re Having A Laugh

Whenever there is a quiet moment, a story appears linking a Newcastle player with one of the ‘top’ clubs.

One of their favourites at the minute is Tim Krul – whether he will go to Spurs or Chelsea?

The press also love to pluck a figure out of the air which is usually rounded up to the nearest five or ten million pounds.

In Timmy’s case it is usually ‘£15m Krul Off To Chelsea’ or ‘Spurs To Sign £15m Krul in the summer’.

If there is on eplayer Newcastle would be mental to let go it is Tim Krul, so if you accept he is one of, if not the biggest asset, then what is his value in this crazy football world we inhabit?

As a comparison, David De Gea signed for Manchester United as a relatively inexperienced 20 year old who had never played in England, never mind the Premier League. He has had a season of brilliance mixed with embarrassing moments, especially coming off his line, the Mancs spent around £18m on him and he still hasn’t won a full international cap.

In contrast, Krul is a regular in the Dutch squad and has been capped by his country. Just turned 24 he has done his apprenticeship in Newcastle’s youth and reserve teams as well as such exotic locations as Carlisle and Falkirk.

That toughening up process undoubtedly contributing to an outstanding season with a current figure of 13 clean sheets and Alan Pardew estimating that Krul has personally been worth at least ten points of Newcastle’s current total.

Credit to the club for tying up the likes of Coloccini and Krul on lengthy contracts, the Dutch keeper having five more years at the end of this season.

In today’s market Tim Krul is worth £15m….and the rest but to Newcastle United he is priceless.
