Newcastle’s ‘hopes’ of finishing fourth have had a lift from an unlikely source.

When Arsene Wenger was asked if  the race for fourth place was between Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal  this is what he had to say;

“It’s too early to say that, I wouldn’t completely rule out Newcastle nor Liverpool. Of course the most obvious battle is between Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal but you have to wait two or three games.

There are 10 games to go, but three games ago we were 10 points behind Tottenham. Things can change quickly. You just want to be focused on your next game and give everything.

It is both more exciting and more difficult, I believe it’s promising for next season because the teams will be stronger again so it promises to be an even more exciting championship”.

Whether United were ever in the race for fourth, or indeed still are, is only just so many words.

winning matches is what it is all about and everything else takes care of itself.

As it happens I do think we were in the race for fourth and and two wins against Wolves and the mackems plus a point at the Emirates would currently have had us on 49 points, level with Chelsea, a point behind Arsenal and seven ahead of Liverpool.

Before the Wolves match quite clearly we were in the race for fourth, now we are not.
