How Important Is Graham Carr At Newcastle United?
Chief scout Graham Carr has been instrumental in bringing in the likes of Cheick Tiote, Yohan Cabaye and Papiss Cissé as men who could make a difference on Tyneside.
Adding to the list of plaudits Carr has received, Peter Beardsley had this to say about his fellow Geordie;
“Graham Carr is one of the most important people. The job he is doing is incredible.
The great thing is, he is from Newcastle originally, so he knows what is expected, he knows what the Geordies want to see on the field. When you look at Cisse’s strike on his debut, I think there might be a few more there”.
Obviously the fact he is one of ours is a bonus but the fact he is very well regarded in his role is what it’s all about. Graham Carr has worked in scouting for Tottenham under David Pleat as well as at Manchester City and Notts County under Sven Goran-Eriksson.
In February 2010 he arrived at St.James’ Park as Dennis Wise’s replacement and between himself and Alan Pardew they appear to have done a remarkable job.
The secret of the transfer market isn’t necessarily about buying cheap, it is about value for money. How far Carr and Pardew can take this club may well depend on how much freedom they are given to wheel and deal.
