How Does NUFC’s Wage Bill Compare With Other Clubs?
The latest Newcastle United financial results made interesting reading in a number of ways.
One thing that stands out is that while the wage bill has significantly come down in the last couple of years, the quality of our first team definitely hasn’t.
You have to give the club credit for this overall but certainly Graham Carr and Alan Pardew deserve medals for bringing relative success on a tight budget.
If you look below at the latest league table of wage bills, Newcastle United are drifting towards the relegation area, unlike on the pitch.
I think the biggest difference now is that the players on the biggest money are now our biggest achievers on the pitch, just as nobody begrudged Alan Shearer the big bucks, you don’t mind it when players are earning it.
Both before and during Mike Ashley’s time we have had countless players leeching money out of the club while giving very little back, players whose wage deals were way above either their ability or effort, or both. Maybe only Alan Smith and Xisco would fall into that category now.
Just for starters I can think of Owen, Luque, Boumsong, Barton, Smith, Viduka, Geremi, Carr, Bowyer……any you’d like to add?
