I don’t really know what to make of Danny Guthrie. He definitely made us look a better, more attractive, team in the promotion season once he was moved into the middle of the park. That was at the main expense of Alan Smith though so maybe it is no wonder it improved things and made watching the team easier on the eye.
How far should Newcastle go to keep him? Does Guthrie really want to stay?
This is what Danny Guthrie told the Chronicle when asked about his future;
“I’m just scheduled for talks. Come the end of the season, my agent will be in touch with the club, or vice-versa.
We’re just waiting to see what happens”.
My reading of the situation is that clearly Newcastle United don’t see him as essential to the future as they wouldn’t have let the situation run this far.
On the other hand I think the player sees himself as a first team player and that is only right as you don’t want players happy to be not involved.
What it comes down to for me is that Guthrie isn’t good enough to be first choice but good enough to be one of your three or four central midfield options. I think it is clear that the manager sees Cabaye and Tiote as his first choice pairing and would Guthrie sign a new contract on that basis?
I think not but my nightmare scenario is that Newcastle sell Tiote and Guthrie is promoted to first choice by default.
That would be a big backward step for Newcastle United but watch this space.
