Calm Down, It’s Only A Corner For Newcastle United
Going into Sunday’s derby match, this season Newcastle United had only scored once from a corner, nineteen corners later Newcastle United have now scored once from a corner, all season.
Although in the sunderland match United came the closer to adding to that single goal than they have since October 1st, that day Ba scored from a left wing corner and yesterday we had an almost carbon copy as again it was swung in from the left and Demba met it with a great header that beat everybody & everything apart from the woodwork.
As well as the lack of goals from midfield, the lack of threat from corners is a major disadvantage, especially in a match like this weekend where sunderland defended so deep for half of the match and the pressure leads to nineteen(!) corners.
As for players attacking those corner kicks, I don’t like to single him out because he’s so out of his depth and struggling even worse at the minute but Mike Williamson has failed to score a single goal so far in his Newcastle United career.
At 6Ft 4 you would think he must get on the end of a set-piece sometime but not yet…
With this lack of threat from corners it is clear to me that United have to come up with a different approach and I would be tempted at the very least to do short corners, which brings two of their players out of the area and at least mixes up the angle and variety of delivery.
Alternatively, we could just retain possession by booting it back to Tim Krul every time!
