A player who has divided opinion at St.James’ Park is Steven Taylor. For me though his form this season simply confirmed what a talent and character he is, unfortunately some take his air of confidence as arrogance.
With Steven Taylor in the team, Newcastle United conceded fifteen goals in fourteen league matches. Since his injury there have been twenty two conceded in eleven!
Statistics don’t always tell us everything but it seems compelling that we average almost exactly one goal a game with Taylor and then that doubles since he’s been missing.
Some players end up with an undeservedly enhanced reputation when they are out injured but Steven Taylor’s committed approach is such that I would have been tempted to make him captain at teh start of the season, though I am more than happy with Coloccini’s impact in that role.
At the top levels of sport maybe the difference is at least as much in terms of the mental strength as well as pure ability, Steven Taylor ticks both boxes for me whilst unfortunately the likeable Mike Williamson just isn’t at the races with either.
