NUFC Video Classic Invade Old Trafford

We take you back to 1984, Arthur Cox had walked out of St.James’ Park after shabby treatment from the board, despite winning promotion and bringing players like Beardsley and Keegan to Newcastle.

His replacement was Jack Charlton who most definitely hadn’t been a popular choice, amazingly United won their first three matches to go top of the table and even a midweek defeat at Highbury had hardly dampened the mood of Newcastle fans with a trip to Old Trafford up next.

Remember, these were the days where you could wake up on a Saturday morning and decide on the spot to go to an away match, you just paid on the gate and there was always somebody you knew taking a transit fan where they could squeeze another one in.

The scene was set and of course the team let us down with a 5-0 defeat but anybody who travelled that day will never forget this invasion of Old Trafford.

We got in quite early and were right behind the goal, as the away end became packed to bursting they started opening up the adjoining paddock section by section until Newcastle had half of that as well. As always with standing areas there’ll always be raging debate about actual numbers but I would say there were around tweleve or thirteen thousand minimum there.

I feel sorry for kids today who will never experience those mad mad days of following the Toon.

The first ninety seconds or so of this video are what you need to watch, Newcastle have behind the goal to the right and half the paddock opposite the cameras.
