NUFC – Six Matches, Why Not Us?
Six matches, just six bloody matches is all it takes to win an FA Cup. Why not us?
If you could transfer Newcastle United’s early league form into the Cup we would have walked it – the first eleven Premier League matches produced seven wins and four draws.
It only takes six wins to lift a trophy!
If people want to go down the amusing route of saying we didn’t play ‘anyone’ early on in the league, well just look at the opposition in our cup games earlier this season.
Scunthorpe, Forest, Blackburn (twice!) and Brighton, you wouldn’t mind having that run of matches as we now aim for Champions League, Europa Cup, top half…safety!
It is a bit of a sick joke that any football fan around the country over a certain age will instantly think ‘Cup Kings’, whenever Newcastle United are mentioned.
Even when we had really good teams under Keegan and Sir Bobby we were just never at the races in the cups, I wouldn’t care as well but with both those sides packed with quality attacking options and pace, you could just imagine them lighting up that lush Wembley pitch on the big occasion.
Then the two times we did get to Wembley in ’98 and ’99 each time we played that season’s title winners! What is more, in those two finals we had tried to beat the top teams in the land with the likes of Charvet, Pistone, Domi, Glass, Ketsbaia and Andreas Andersson!
Other teams such as Liverpool, despite not winning the League for over twenty years, have just got that knack of winning all or nothing games. i don’t even want to have a look and count up how many cups they have won in that time but they have won the Champions League and got to another final of it, plus god knows how many FA and League Cup wins and final appearances.
A curse, bad luck, or something missing in the Newcastle United psyche, you decide.
