NUFC Champions League – Is It All About Belief?

At what stage would Newcastle fans think their club had a chance of 4th place in the Premiership and a Champions League spot.

I think because many of us are so traumatised by past United failures that even if we were five up in injury time on last day at Goodison, only needing a win to claim that 4th place, some of us would still think it could somehow go pear-shaped.

I think there is a big difference in shouting the odds and getting all ‘deluded’ by claiming we are nailed on for that fourth spot, rather than just saying/thinking…if we can beat the weaker teams in the division and avoid defeat in the three matches against our ‘competitors’; Arsenal(A), Chelsea(A) and Liverpool(H) – just maybe…

Obviously we are all looking for the contributions of the returning Ba, Tiote and Cissé to give the team a huge lift if we are to have any chance of reaching for the stars but a look at the recent form guide might really start to give you a headache thinking about whether this looking upwards is so daft.

The recent form is normally taken as the last 6 league matches and despite our squad being at its weakest point of the season for many of those matches the number of points are as follows;

Newcastle United 12

Chelsea 9

Liverpool 8

Arsenal 5

The transfer window might have slammed shut but there has certainly been a window of opportunity opened up around grabbing that 4th spot, the question is whether Newcastle are good enough to take that chance, or maybe more to the point do they have the belief?
