Newcastle United In The Corner

Do you get a little excited when Newcastle get a corner?

Maybe you should take the opportunity to nip to the toilet instead!

The statistics regarding goals scored and conceded from corners this season make interesting reading.

While United aren’t doing too bad in terms of conceding goals from corner kicks with only three ending up in our net, at the other end NUFC are second from bottom and that is only because Villa haven’t scored any!

I know much of scoring goals from set-pieces can come down to luck but only one goal from a corner in 25 matches is pretty bad going.

So is it the delivery into the box, or the failure of players to attack the ball properly, or a bit of both?

Steven Taylor is normally good for a few goals over a season so he is a miss at the moment but apart from Coloccini and possibly Ba I can’t think of many of our team I’d put money on scoring from one. Tiote stays outside the box, Jonas has the height but maybe not the hairdo, while I wouldn’t bet on our strikers like Best and Shola scoring regularly from anywhere, including corner kicks. Maybe Cissé will be the one leaping like a salmon….

As for the delivery I’m guessing Cabaye, Guthrie and Ryan Taylor have taken almost every corner between the, I’d say all of them have a decent cross in them but for whatever reason we don’t get the end result.

Interesting to see Villa haven’t scored any when you consider they’ve got big dopes like Dunne and Cuellar throwing themselves in.

Possibly it is just one of those things and I’ve come up with a novel idea that I might get patented…

Maybe we’d be better off kicking the ball straight out next to the corner flag and making the opposition take a throw in from a rubbish position, I wonder what the stats are for us scoring from them!
