Cissé “I Could Not Be Happier”
Over the years we’ve seen so many good, and not so good, players at Newcastle United.
In amongst those we’d consider as massive disappointments are certain players who come with the right pedigree but for whatever reason just don’t do it in black & white.
I’ve always believed that one of the main ingredients a Newcastle United player needs is to be able to use the St.James’ Park crowd to his advantage, to buzz off that intensity and expectation.
You obviously have local lads like Shearer and Beardsley where it came as second nature but others such as Les Ferdinand, Craig Bellamy and David Kelly equally immersed themselves into the Geordie psyche. They didn’t see the hopes and expectations of the fans as a burden, they used it as an instant adrenaline shot which helped them to be the very best players they could be on Tyneside.
I think throughout our team we have players who are buying into this mentality, from certain squad players such as Ryan Taylor right through to the likes of our top players such as Coloccini and Tiote.
It is no coincidence that the three ex-players I named are all strikers because those I believe are the players where it is absolutely essential that they thrive on their relationship with the crowd.
Demba Ba has already discovered that workrate, ability and goals are a potent combination when it comes to the St.James’ Park crowd, on first appearances we might just have discovered somebody else who can scale those same heights.
“From the moment I started warming up I felt them behind me. I was thrilled with the crowd.
In fact I didn’t feel like I needed to move because the Newcastle fans were warming me up with such a great reception!
It’s extraordinary for me to see such an incredible fanbase. I could not be happier”.
Don’t worry Papiss, the feeling is mutual!
