Cabaye v Guthrie – No Contest at NUFC

Wolves at home, 25th of February, it is a no-brainer that Cabaye returns in place of Guthrie.

I have sensed this debate breaking out for some time, bizarrely there are some people who will believe Danny Guthrie should stay in the team ahead of Yohan Cabaye.

I find it both strange and amusing, differences of opinion in football mean you are never short of something to talk about when you meet another fan, even if he/she is from another club.

In our case though, preferring Guthrie to Cabaye would be like playing Harper ahead of Krul, Williamson instead of Steven Taylor, Perch preferred to Tiote, or Shola in front of Demba Ba!

Guthrie has some nice touches and can pick a pass, indeed he might be worth persevering with as third or fourth choice in centre midfield and deserving of a year or two extra contract to see if he can make it.

The truth is though that during Cabaye’s suspension we have been totally overrun in the middle of the pitch by both Spurs and Blackburn, while against Villa (at home!) you could possibly claim Guthrie and Perch got a battling draw against their direct opponents.

While Guthrie often goes missing, Cabaye is at the centre of play all the time, always available and a constant presence against the central midfielders he’s up against. While Danny Guthrie clearly has stamina problems, Yohan Cabaye is still running himself into the ground in injury time.

Thank go we’ll have Tiote and Cabaye available for Wolves, fitness permitting.

As the saying goes, the odd bit of form by Guthrie is temporary, the class of Cabaye is permanent.
