In 1983 a classic comedy hit the screens, written by Geordies with Geordies in the central roles.

The iconic comedy drama was of course ‘Auf Wiedersehen Pet’ which became a massive success, brilliantly written (mostly) by Toon fans Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais.

In the central roles were of course Jimmy Nail, Tim Healy and Kevin Whately, Geordie lads playing Newcastle United supporting brickies, though I don’t know about you but I found it hard to understand when they then arranged a trip to see the mackems play a friendly on the continent!

Anyway, we came across the following article which is all about the future king coming out in support of Burnley, in footballing terms.

Now to some people elsewhere in the country that might be newsworthy but it was something later on that caught my eye.

Burnley FC are attempting to claim Newcastle United fan Neville (Kevin Whateley) as one of theirs, give ower man what would Brenda say, never mind Dennis and Oz!

Prince Charles has admitted he is a fan of an English football club – but his team are not part of the Premier League’s aristocracy.

The heir to the British throne has given royal assent to Burnley, who are currently 10th in the Championship – the second tier of English football.

“A consortium of my charities, including the British Asian Trust, has been working in Burnley,” the Prince said.

“Some of you asked this evening whether I support a British football club and I said ‘yes, Burnley’.”

“And people have responded ‘Burnley?’ Oh yes, because Burnley has been through some very challenging times and I’m trying to find ways of helping to regenerate and raise aspirations and self-esteem in that part of the world.

“My charities have been working there together to demonstrate that an integrated approach can produce the best dividends.”

The club have sent the Prince a complimentary VIP season ticket after learning of the news.

A club spokesman said: “It’s no surprise to see Charles reaffirming his support for Burnley Football Club as we know he keeps a close eye on our results.

“In fact, as part of our new season ticket package we are sending a complimentary VIP season ticket to Charles and we hope to see him cheering on the Clarets from the Directors’ Box next season… hopefully in the Premier League.”

Other famous Burnley fans include: Tony Blair’s former spin doctor Alastair Campbell; England cricket star James Anderson; former Auf Wiedersehen Pet, Peak Practice and Inspector Morse star Kevin Whatley; and even a couple of members of one-hit wonder pop band Chumbawumba.
