Having (at the last gasp) navigated the FA Cup third round, Newcastle were ball no.23 in yesterday’s fourth round draw.

The suspense didn’t last long as United were second ball out, with an away tie at either Wrexham or Brighton to look forward to. Having drawn 1-1 on the south coast, Tuesday 17th January will see us find out who our opponents are as they replay at Wrexham.

Wrexham are riding high at the top of the Conference while Brighton have fallen to Championship mid-table after a bright start.

Either way you can’t complain when you are drawn against a lower league club, though naturally you’d always take a home tie.

Next out of the bag were the mackems against the smoggies, playing either of them would have generated a ‘little’ more interest but I’d settle for hopefully slipping quietly through into round five when our African absentees should be back in toon.
