Pardew – Let’s Get Colo Signed Up

Alan Pardew must be riding the crest of a wave now that he’s been backed from above with the signing of Papiss Cissé and now he is making clear the next task on his list isn’t necessarily a new centre-half, though everybody fell for the body swerve that was the ‘no new striker in the window’.

Over to Alan Pardew; “The priority for me is Coloccini’s new contract and one or two others. We are focused on that because we want to keep our best players. He is our captain and I want to keep him. Negotiations are due to restart shortly.

We have that (fear of big bids) about our players all the time. We have to react if something comes up, but there have been no scares for us.

We want to run to the summer with all the players we have got. I do see that happening but that doesn’t guarantee that. We are on our guard.

If one Champions League team plucks from another, then one of them might come and pluck from us. You are never going to stop that”.

Having made Fabricio Coloccini his captain, it was the final rubber-stamping of his importance both on the pitch and in the dressing room.

Now the manager is looking to get his captain tied up on a new contract and the outlook has to be many times brighter than at any time in the Argentinian’s time at St.James’ Park.

His mate Jonas signed an extended contract earlier this season, the team currently stand sixth in the table and we’ve just added what looks an outstanding goalscorer to play alongside the sublime Demba Ba.

Coloccini is widely accepted as being the top earner at the club but on this occasion it would be money very well spent.
