Newcastle United – The Young Guns
With Alan Smith looking as if he on his way to MK Dons and Peter Lovenkrands likely to exit in the very short-term as well, you may be interested to know exactly how many outfield players we have on the ‘wrong’ side of thirty.
If you take those two out of the equation then the answer is two and if you’d asked this question a week ago then the answer would have been one, as Coloccini only reached this landmark last Sunday.
The other one who is in the 30+ club is Shola Ameobi, while if we include goalkeepers it would of course bring in elder statesman Steve Harper.
It could be a distinct possibility that come the new season in August, Fabricio Coloccini could be the only player of 30 or over.
I would say Smith and Lovenkrands stand less chance than me of getting another contract even if they cling on for dear life, while surely the end of this season will see the club finally try and dispense with their longest serving inhabitants, Steve Harper and Shola Ameobi.
For all four players surely time has moved on and if this team/squad is looking to move forward there won’t be a place in the first eighteen for any of this group.
The club made clear they were looking to bring in younger players and without being a statto and checking every other squad, I reckon it would be a pretty startling, but welcome, statistic if United went into the 2012/13 Premier League season with Captain Coloccini at the ripe old age of 30, out on his own as the voice of experience in the Newcastle dressing room.
