An interesting candidate that has been put forward is Aly Cissokho who is a French pacey left-back currently playing for Lyon.
The following appeared in the French regional newspaper ‘Progres’.
The absence of Aly Cissokho in the Lyon squad that travelled to Montpellier on Saturday surprised many, the defender from Olympique Lyonnais was officially suffering with muscle pain. This absence could be justified by the imminent departure of Cissokho. The article maintains that he will travel in the next 72 hours to Newcastle to undergo a medical. If it is successful Aly Cissokho could sign on Monday with the Magpies, who have been watching him for quite some time. No price has been mentioned so far, but we know that Jean-Michel Aulas (owner and Chairman of Olympique Lyonnais) wants to get around 10 million euros.
Putting two and two together (and probably getting eight hundred and fifty three), I could see a possibility of Santon moving to the right to accommodate Cissokho, producing on paper at least a formidable pair of attacking full-backs/wing-backs.
Cissokho has one cap for France and fits the profile in terms of being only twenty four, having gone for 15m euros to Lyon from Porto I’d imagine his wages wouldn’t be small plus they are talking of a potential transfer fee of 10m euros which altogether would declare a bit of a statement of intent from United.
Before moving to Lyon, AC Milan had all but signed him before identifying potential spinal problems which were apparently cleared up in a second medical when Lyon swooped.
Putting another two on the previous two plus two, despite Simpson’s very good form we don’t know exactly how the club are viewing the fact they haven’t as yet tied him up on a longer deal.
Bringing Cissokho in and at the same time bringing in maybe half his transfer fee through the sale of Simpson could well appeal to Mike Ashley.
Of course, there is probably more chance of me and you playing for the Toon, or is there?
