Classic NUFC No.9 Video – Micky Quinn

As Papiss Cissé waits to make his debut for United, we look back at the legends and characters who have previously worn the famous black & white number nine shirt.

Step forward Micky Quinn, now radio pundit, racehorse trainer, occasional dieter and the grandson of Italian boxer Luigi Silvano (known professionally as Lou Sullivan) – not a lot of people know that.

Civil war raged at St.James’ Park as John Hall was engaged in battle with Gordon McKeag and his fellow board members for control of Newcastle United, an organised boycott by United fans was launched in the summer of 1989 and to make matters worse Newcastle opened their division two campaign with a home match against free spending Leeds.

Newcastle United had invested in a jovial scouser who looked anything but the athletic centre-forward many fans might have wished for and Quinn was roundly ridiculed before he’d even kicked a ball.

Saturday 19th August 1989, St.James’ Park, Micky Quinn strolls onto the pitch and the rest as they say is history.

Enjoy this classic video action as Micky Quinn, Newcastle United Number 9, makes his debut.
