This week has seen the press awash with rumours that Andy Carroll is set to return to Newcastle, whether that be on loan or full time. The trouble is, his wages or Liverpool’s lack of cover up front are two reasons why I would have said this is a deal that won’t happen at the current time.

However, having watched him lumbering around in the League cup semi final, feeding off scraps, now I’m not too sure.

No matter what reasons or excuses are put up in his defence, he still looks a shadow of the player he was 12 months ago, and therefore if Liverpool could get a replacement striker on the books, Andy Carroll could be on his way out

In the coming months, he is going to have to make big decisions on his future, because if he stays at Anfield much longer, his career is going to grind to a halt.

Here is a thought though. What if it isn’t Newcastle who take him on? What if he joins the bunch down the road?  He certainly is a Martin O’Neill type of player and Andy Carroll would suit their style of play.

Now before you dismiss the thought completely, remember that despite what many of us fans still wish to believe, 99% of footballers treat their profession as simply that, a job.

If we look at his recent run-ins with the law, he isn’t known for making good decisions, so if the offer was made to him, could Andy Carroll bring himself to move to the town that’s twinned with Basra and Kabul?
