4 More Points = NUFC Success?
When does a tackle become dangerous enough to be deemed a straight red? I don’t necessarily subscribe to the ‘two-footed challenge is an automatic red’ directive. Are you telling me that Shaun Derry’s one footed challenge, which was very late and had his full weight behind it right onto Cabaye’s foot/ankle, was not as bad as Vincent Kompany’s last week? The same referee seemed to think not. Maybe Cabaye’s challenge at Anfield had come back to haunt him.
If for argument’s sake Derry’s other foot was ‘in the vicinity’ of his tackling foot, similar to Kompany’s challenge, should he have been sent off? I always thought it was more about the guy who launches himself shin height with two feet together in a deliberate attempt to hurt someone that was the cause for concern, not the full-blooded but very well timed tackle that we do see to win the ball, as Kompany did very well in my opinion.
It was theorised in The Hotspur afterwards, that a certain Mark Hughes is responsible for the frankly shocking challenges that were going in from the Rangers players on Sunday. He was also blamed for Ben Arfa’s leg breaker from his Citeh days. The general consensus was that Hughes instructs his players to kick people first and think about football second. It was hard to disagree with those thoughts.
Gary and myself agreed we now only need another 4 points to have had a successful season. The ‘Chef’ wants 60 but I suppose being an entrepreneur he will always have his sights set a bit higher. However, Nigel is convinced we are destined to win the FA Cup. I bet him £100 that won’t happen but come May it would be money well spent if I had to hand it over.
A final point from Sunday post-match which was the goal highlights seen within half an hour of leaving St James’. Not on the large screen TV you understand but thrust into my hand via a mobile (or ‘telephone’ as Gary still prefers to call it). Technology blows my mind.
Whatever happened to watching out for The Pink being delivered in The Beehive and parting with a few shekels to have something tangible in your hand confirming results and league positions? Not to mention hoping your team might be one of the few shown on MOTD by the time you get home.
What do you mean they show all the goals these days!!
