Contract For Guthrie?
Danny Guthrie has come in for Cheick Tiote and surprised a fair few people with a little run of decent performances, only to fall to the current injury pile-up after the Chelsea match.
With six months to go to the end of his contract it couldn’t have happened at a worse time for the midfielder.
Does he deserve a new contract? The last three years or so show a player who has had his moments but never really looked like he could make a claim to be a first team fixture. On the other hand the last half dozen matches have suggested he might have found improvement under Alan Pardew, just like a number of other players.
It is a tricky one but I would hate to see the club go down the route they did with the likes of Shola and Nile Ranger, giving them out of all proportion (in terms of length) contracts because primarily they were relatively cheap and happy to stay.
I think Guthrie has earned more time at Newcastle but for me the compromise would be to go to him now and give him a year’s extension as a reward for recent showings and the chance to then impress over the next eighteen months and win a longer deal.
Does Danny Guthrie deserve more or less?
