In days of old Newcastle fans would be waiting in anticipation for who was going to be targeted but in recent times the boot has quite literally been on the other foot.
Over to Alan Pardew –
“You’re talking about Newcastle United – nothing is certain here. We could lose one of our great players, who knows? Some of the financial decisions are taken out of my hands.
I want to strengthen in one or two areas but we’ll have to be on our guard against one of our best players going when the window opens.
You can never think you’re OK. I learned that in my days at West Ham, but the Andy Carroll thing brought that home more vividly than most things”.
Recent matches have seen injuries making the squad creak and groan but it has just about held together, to weaken it would be potentially catastrophic.
A scenario of Tiote and Ba away at the African Nations and then the club selling Coloccini or Taylor(S) because it was an offer too good to turn down, is just too depressing to contemplate.
Surely the time has come for Mike Ashley to be building on what has been achieved so far, it is a bit like ‘Jenga’, or ‘Ker Plunk’ for the older generation. You can be clever up to a point by removing key pieces but if you try to be too clever and pull the wrong bit out….CRASH!
