The Times They Are A Changing

The Mag…a website…you’re joking aren’t you?

Times have changed over the years I’ve been following Newcastle United. I started off being taken by my dad in the late 60’s, sitting at the front of the Popular Side….magic days and some great early memories.

It’s funny how I can remember games from the early 70’s but can’t remember what I had for me tea last night.

When the Popular Side was knocked down to make way for the ‘New Stand’…known as the East Stand to some…. we moved to the Gallowgate End, the Leazes End was far too rough…..especially coming from Hebburn…they would have thought I was a Mackem!

It was in the Gallowgate End that I have my happiest memories, from Supermac in full flow, to Keegan’s debut, the subsequent promotion and eventually Alan Shearer’s record breaking strike.

Having said that ,to be fair I didn’t establish a base there. Sometimes the centre, sometimes the corner and occasionally the West Stand corner where I still have a vivid memory of lads playing cards in the dark days of the then second division, or whatever it’s called now.

A football injury and walking stick eventually led to my first season ticket in the Milburn Stand 20 odd years ago…sitting down at football matches….mental. I stayed there until the ‘seats fiasco’ before being shifted to the Corner of the Gallowgate again…but this time sitting down rather than jumping up and down.

Here there and everywhere but I still haven’t managed many games watching from the Leazes End. I did one match from the East Stand when Michael O’Neill scored a hat-trick in the mid 80s against Luton.

There’s been some changes I can tell you over the years but my dad has been through exactly the same….except he’s seen a few FA Cup wins along the way.

I’m sure we are due some changes in the years ahead…but The Mag…a website…I cannot believe that!
