Is Football Art?

I am not really a culture vulture but I am impressed by artists of all kinds who produce works of art that are difficult, beautiful, or striking.

My criterion is simply to ask, ‘could I do that or not’? Excellence is all.

So I am not a fan of Tracy Emin who for me is a con artist, ‘con’ meaning conceptual.

Her talent, if she has one, is to shock…but only once. Where is all this leading?

It leads to Fabricio Coloccini and the fabulous Leonardo Da Vinci exhibition currently in London. Leonardo’s statue ‘David’ is beautiful, so is Colo, especially his hair.

I have only one reservation. I have never seen Colo naked so I cannot be certain my comparison is apt.

However, I would not admit to being a convert when appraising his form (on the pitch). His reading of the game and his interceptions are excellent but his physical shortcomings prevent him from being a world beater.

Still, I repeat, I have never seen him naked so you never know!
