The Cheshire Police released the following statement earlier today.

“At 7.08am this morning, Sunday 27 November, police were informed of an incident at Aldford Road, Huntington. Officers went to the scene where a 42-year-old man was found dead. There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and next of kin have been informed.”

When somebody famous dies, it is a fine balance when you talk about their passing, when you aren’t close family or a personal friend.

No doubt all kinds of things will be written in the media regarding the events surrounding Gary Speed’s death, sadly experience tells us that not all of that will be true.

Gary Speed wasn’t somebody close to me but I have to say I was shocked when I heard the news and felt a sadness that for whatever reason he’d decided to end his life. On the surface a man with everything to live for but you just don’t know what is going on in somebody else’s head.

A close friend who I’d known since school did something similar a number of years ago, everything going for him but had convinced himself that taking such a drastic step was best for him and his family. It didn’t matter that it didn’t make sense to anybody else, he couldn’t see beyond what he thought and felt.

As Newcastle fans we knew Gary Speed as a very good player and character, honest and decent, a million miles away from the attitude displayed by so many players in the modern game, both for Newcastle and beyond.

One of Sir Bobby’s ‘blue chip’ players, Gary brought out the best in players like Kieron Dyer and was instrumental in the top four finishes & Champions League adventures, as well as the FA Cup runs, in his time at St.James’ Park.

I was lucky enough to interview Gary for The Mag a number of times and he was always a pleasure to talk to, plus he always acknowledged me whenever I was at the training ground etc seeing anybody else, not a big deal you might think but maybe you haven’t met many of our past players.

A high profile player but a down to earth character, it won’t be just Newcastle United fans who will miss such a figure
