Newcastle In 12 Goal Thriller 23 Years Ago – Video Special

A bit of light relief away from the endless stresses and strains of being a Newcastle fan at the moment.

Twenty three years ago to the day, 1st October 1991.

Newcastle traveled to Tranmere Rovers for a Full Members Cup match – this was an extra cup competition that was only for clubs in the top two divisions, created after English clubs were banned from European competition after the Heysel disaster.

I also remember this being the first Newcastle match I saw live on this new fangled Sky TV, went round to a mate’s house to watch it.

Live football on TV, I wonder why that never caught on…

So in advance of the Premier League coming into being with Sky one of the main movers, United played Tranmere, with the competition entitled at the time – the Zenith Data Systems Cup.

At the time Newcastle were in the second division so we entered the competition at the not so heady heights of the 1st Round – Northern Section.

Watch the footage below for one of the worst displays of defending you will ever see, from both sides.

However, there were also quality finishes with Micky Quinn, Gavin Peacock and Lee Clark all getting two each.

Six goals scored and yet United still lost!

A crazy night with the scores 3-3 at the end of 90 minutes, then 6-6 after extra time, with the predictable 3-2 defeat on penalties at the end.

Enjoy.
