Is Football A Step Too Far In Some Places? – Video Special

Sad to say that politics has all too recently came into our lives as Newcastle United fans.

The tragic deaths of Liam Sweeney and John Alder and so many other people on that MH17 flight, bringing it home to us how politics and football can easily collide, two football fans innocently traveling to the other side of the World to watch their team.

Then caught up in the politics of the Russia/Ukraine conflict.

Sadly there are places in the World where politics is an every day fact in the lives of football fans and nowhere more so than Serbia.

The break-up of the former Yugoslavia saw a match between Dinamo Zagreb and Red Star Belgrade end up in a riot that highlighted the political tensions that eventually led to civil war.

Even after ‘peace’ was restored, tension has of course remained and nowhere more publicly so than in the football arena.

Last night saw the match between Serbia and Albania abandoned after the amazing scenes you can watch below.

How can you hope to have a game of football when it is clear that the police/authorities have so little power to resist the people out for mischief.

Just watch how little protection the Albanian players are given by the police and how the ringleaders of the trouble are allowed to stroll across the pitch without a care in the world.

There are so many things wrong with English football but I’m just grateful that we live in a City and Country where football can take pace beyond the realms of national/international politics.
