20 Years Ago Today – Newcastle Legend Gets First England Goal – Video Special
It is twenty years ago to the day that Robert Lee scored his first goal for England.
The Kevin Keegan revolution at St.James’ Park had many facets but one of the most forgotten is just how many players he produced for England while at Newcastle United.
While you couldn’t claim that Tyneside suddenly became the heart of the support for the national team, the appearance of black & whites in England colours definitely increased interest levels to a massive degree.
Keegan took Robert Lee from second tier Charlton and within two years he’d won the Championship, finished third in the Premier League and was scoring for England.
Under Keegan’s management, the likes of Robert Lee, Barry Venison, Les Ferdinand, Steve Howey, David Batty, Alan Shearer and Warren Barton all wore the England strip.
At times under Alan Pardew Newcastle haven’t had a single English player in the team.
For now though enjoy Robert Lee’s first goal for England in this 1-1 draw with Romania.
Almost two years before he came back home we have Alan Shearer climbing majestically to knock it down for Robert Lee’s first England goal.
