Newcastle Make List Of Top ‘Brands’

For the first time, the brand values of all the major sports teams worldwide have been calculated and compared.

The list features four European football clubs (Man.U., Bayern, Real Madrid and Barca) at the very top, with the main list made up of American sporting ‘brands’ and European football equivalents.

The BrandFinance 2012 report sees Newcastle creeping into the top one hundred with a ‘brand’ value of $86m in 96th place.

Obviously this is very small beer compared to Manchester United at the top of the pile on a brand value of $853m, followed by Bayern Munich at $785m, then the likes of real Madrid and Barca on $600m and $580m respectively.

The other English clubs to feature are 11th Chelsea ($398m), 12th Arsenal ($388m), 13th Liverpool ($367m), 21st Manchester City ($302m), 35th Spurs ($225m), 95th Villa ($87m) and 96th Newcastle ($86m).

The values are determined as of the last day of the calendar year so for example, the 2012 figure for Newcastle and all the other clubs was valued on 31st December 2011, see the full list here for all of the details.

Interesting to look at Newcastle’s figures over a four year period and the 2009 NUFC brand was valued at $84m with that figure determined at 31st December 2008, only months after Mike Ashley’s takeover at St.James’ Park.

That went down to $63m in 2010, $25m in 2011, then recovering to $86m in 2012.

It kind of emphasises Mike Ashley’s ups and downs at the club with the club currently having recovered to the ‘brand value’ that it had when Mike Ashley first took over.

It is a positive that Newcastle United have made the list but there is that huge gap up to Spurs on around three times Newcastle’s value, that surely must be the kind of challenge Newcastle have to take on in the coming seasons, the figure obviously reliant on success on and off the pitch..
