Where Do NUFC Stand In The Social Media League Tables?

Social media is having a major impact on all kinds of aspects of life and the football world is still largely finding its feet as it struggles to adapt.

Many clubs, including Newcastle United, have suffered from idiot players using Twitter (in particular) to reveal unpleasant sides to their characters with racist/homophobic messages sent out, also reinforcing the perception that the average football player isn’t the brightest.

How far the actual clubs are embracing the social media world differs from club to club and a lot of that is down to how much resources they are prepared to throw at this area.

It is also interesting to see from the ‘league tables’ below that while Manchester United are all dominant on Facebook with twenty four million, they have decided not to use Twitter to promote their club. On the other hand Chelsea have recently used Twitter as the route to launch their latest strip.

Newcastle United’s place in all of this? Newcastle are undoubtedly playing catch up on a number of clubs that they would expect to figure better against, such as Aston Villa who currently have twice the numbers on Facebook or Tottenham with three times Newcastle’s followers on Twitter.

Does all this really matter? Obviously it isn’t a matter of life or death but for a club to compete they need to maximise every area of the club and as Newcastle’s stock has risen on the pitch they need to exploit that in every way possible off it.
