United Reach Cup Final – Whitley Bay 0 Newcastle United 1

Silverware could still be on the cards this season as Newcastle reserves (under 21s) eventually overcame Whitley Bay to seal a place in the Northumberland Senior Cup Final.

United were drawn at home but no doubt to the disappointment of both teams last night, Newcastle decided not to host the match at St.James’ Park so instead it was a shirt trip down the Coast Road to Hillheads and a crowd of just under a thousand watching the match unfold.

On his return from injury, Gael Bigirimana captained the side and was the only player appearing who had first team experience.

These games have proved an interesting challenge over the years with the Senior Cup pitting United’s promising kids against the more experienced local non-league teams.

Whitley Bay did themselves proud and in a match of very few chances they edged the contest until the closing stages when full-time training and fitness began to take effect.

It still though took a superb left foot effort from Rolando Aarons to seal it with five minutes to go. The winger maybe extra energised at having travelled with the first team to Fulham though he didn’t make the final eighteen.

Newcastle will now play the winners of tonight’s clash between Ashington and Blyth Spartans, with the final to be played on Tuesday 22nd April at St.James’ Park with a 7pm kick-off.

Newcastle United: Mitchell, Sterry, Williams, Streete, Satka, Bigirimana, Richardson, Miele (Kemen 43), Roberts, Gilliead (Quinn 68), Aarons
