Twenty Three Days Since We Heard From Demba Ba

The Demba Ba story was always going to be a pain this Summer, once it became clear his contract issues wouldn’t be sorted before the players went off for their jollies.

The latest round of stories, lies and nonsense has had everything from claims that Ba travelled twice to Turkey to speak to Galatasaray, right through to he has no intention of leaving and it is just his numerous ‘representatives’ pitching his name at clubs in the hope he’ll agree to a move which will land them bid wads of cash, for their…work.

The truth is somewhere but proving a bit elusive to pin down at the moment, you pay your money and take your choice.

One interesting aside is that Demba Ba was more than keen in the past to use Twitter to get his message out to his 120,000+ followers. In fact a number of times he even responded to questions posed by Newcastle fans to reassure them he was staying at St.James’ Park.

However, it is now twenty three days since Demba has ‘tweeted’, is the silence deafening?

My guess is that Demba Ba wants to stay at Newcastle United but also would like an improved contract in return for the removal of the much talked about transfer fee clause, believed to be limiting any fee to £7m.

I’d also like to think that Ba’s lack of public comment/tweeting is because he wants to reach agreement with Newcastle and doesn’t want to aggravate the situation.

The clause is reported to expire at the end of July so will it be possible for Demba Ba, his representatives, Mike Ashley and of course, the fans, all to be kept happy?

Be careful of falling into the short-term memory trap and just remember how immense Ba was in those months before the African Cup of Nations, plus he did well by the team even after Cisse’s arrival.

We’ve seen plenty of bad players at Newcastle United, to then recognise quality when it comes along. Demba Ba definitely falls into that category and we’d be fools to wish him away.

Most reports suggest he’s on a mostly pay as you play contract given the get out clause the season he’s had crucially injury free even after an international tournament it seems fairly simple that in return for the removal of that get out clause and after that good season his representatives will be seeking a pay rise and a more secure 3-4 year contract than his current one. If that’s not forthcoming and there are many reasons it might not be not least that knee, then I imagine he will be off.

Reportedly he’s on a 30k basic with a 20k top up for every game he plays. If he ends up in Turkey it’ll be with 1 of the clubs virtually guaranteed CL every year seeing as it’s a bit like chilly jockoland insofar as only 2 clubs ( and usually 1 is Galatasary ) can hope to compete for the CL spots. The wonga mentioned is 70k euro per week which equates to approx what he’s on with us. My guess would be, if he leaves, it’s not for the money. Playing the next 4 -5 years with a club destined to compete in the CL every year is the carrot. Of course that means he probably doesn’t believe we can. Simples. Anyone with ambition to prove themselves worthy of competing at the highest level on a regular basis would probably think twice if such opportunity came their way. Of course there are always unique individuals possessing ample talent enough to grace any team in any competition who choose, for reasons of the heart, to forgo such opportunity. We were more than fortunate to witness such unique individuality for many a year when Alan Shearer chose to ply his considerable talents for his hometown club when he could have had the pick of Europe anytime he wanted. Mr Ba has no such heartstring with NUFC so if he goes it’ll be with thanks and gratitude but never with a sense of having lost the irreplaceable.
