Santon Looking The Part

There were some positives from the West Brom match….if you look hard enough!

Two more quality finishes added to the Demba Ba collection, plus a cracking forty five minute cameo from our Italian full-back.

Used often as a wing-back in Italy, I thought Santon looked real quality in the first half against the Baggies.

His surging runs when he spotted the slightest gap suggest to me he will be huge favourite at St.James’ Park given a fair crack with injuries and if we keep quality players to compliment his talents.

Santon has got pace, height and as well as looking the part in defence I think he could be a huge assert going forward. The need for direct play is desperately needed because for example even with this season’s improvement, Gutierrez still doesn’t go for the jugular often enough.

I was surprised nothing much was made of Santon not appearing for the second half on Wednesday as I thought it was obvious only injury would have stopped him reappearing, though belatedly it was confirmed that it was injury that led to his non-reappearance.

In the Chronicle Alan Pardew confirmed that, “Davide’s gone for a scan. We don’t think it’ll be too long, though. He had this before. He had a little bit of fluid and it was fine. It’s the same knee. It is a shame as in the one-and-a-half games he’s shown his quality”.

A slow start to Davide Santon’s United career could pay massive long-term benefits as we’ve seen far too many foreign players have their Newcastle careers ended before they’ve hardly kicked a ball.

I hate to say it but Santon and Enrique would potentially have made an absolutely cracking pair of full-backs. ‘If only’ should be Newcastle United’s catchphrase.
