Newcastle United To Sign Centre-Half

Alan Pardew last night revealed that Newcastle United would be buying a new centre-half this summer.

Fielding questions in a radio phone-in with John Carver on Radio Newcastle, the manager stated as fact that the club would be bringing in a defender who would compete with Steven Taylor and Mike Williamson to play alongside Fabricio Coloccini.

It was interesting to hear because you are so used to managers swerving questions like that but Alan Pardew was quite open that he is going to bring in a central defender to score the eight or more goals he needs from that position. He commented on the fact Steven Taylor hadn’t scored a goal in the early part of the season and Mike Williamson hasn’t scored at all for United.

You can only imagine that Newcastle have somebody very much in their thoughts and I’m guessing for the manager to speak so positively the deal must be all but done, when looking for somebody to fit that profile (dominant goalscoring centre-back) then Ajax’s Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen would seem to tick all of the boxes.

he ticks the boxes but might be out of reach, with the interest of other clubs and the reported fee

Now, many people would have said that Papiss Demba Cisse was out of our reach and we pulled that one off. I believe that we might go for someone like Verthongen with the European cash coming in.

we have more chance getting his def partner Toby Aiderweireld (not a bad player) as i think Vertonghen has his mind set on a move to london
