Luuk De Jong To Make It Three, Not Two, Goalscorers At Newcastle United

Newcastle United ‘Look’ to have made their first move into the Summer transfer market  with an £8m offer for FC Twente’s Luuk De Jong.

Sky Sports are reporting the £8million (€10m) for the Dutch striker who in the past has been valued at over £12m by his club.

De Jong fits much of Newcastle’s current transfer strategy as he’s young (will be 22 in August), scores goals for fun (59 in 119 matches for Twente) and of course with his age and profile it is hard to see him not increasing in value in the future.

I have seen the odd comment that this is another great find by Graham Carr, while I certainly hope and expect that the striker has Carr’s seal of approval I think it is stretching it a  bit to describe a potential deal as a ‘great find’. Especially when De Jong wass included in the squad of one of the favourites for the European Championships and has just finished second top scorer in the Dutch league with 25 goals, 7 behind a player Newcastle were previously linked with, Bas Dost.

The presence of Steve McClaren at FC Twente might not do Newcastle any harm with him being a regular at St.James’ Park over the years.

Unsurprisingly, many people will be adding 2 and 2 together and getting a new club for Demba Ba, hopefully this wouldn’t be the case as if Newcastle are to continue moving forward then having three quality strikers in Cisse, Ba and De Jong would represent real progress for United.

With Leon Best surplus to requirements, a few million coming in from him could subsidise any deal for the Dutch striker who has already played a remarkable 29 games in Europe at the age of 21, as well as picking up 7 caps for Holland.
