Newcastle A ‘Stepping Stone’ For Debuchy?

Talk about giving with one hand and taking away with the other! Some classic quotes surrounding Mathieu Debuchy’s potential move to St.James’ Park.

Ex-French international and Arsenal player, Robert Pires, has been nudging Debuchy towards Newcastle United.

Pires told French publication ‘Le 10 Sport’;

“He has a game which really suits the Premier League with his speed. He also has such an attacking game, but is very aggressive in defence.

Newcastle would be a very good club for him because he would find his friends [Yohan] Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa.

Also, they are one of the top English clubs, with a history and a beautiful stadium. For him and the rest of his career, they would be a nice stepping stone”.

So on the one hand he is telling Pires, Newcastle are ‘…one of the top English clubs, with a history and a beautiful stadium’, gave me a bit of a feelgood factor that did.

Only then to be brought right back down to earth when United are also described as a ‘…nice stepping stone‘.

You know Robert, sometimes people just don’t know when to stop talking!

To be fair, as much as I love NUFC Pires is right really. We are hardly the pinnacle of World Football – not yet anyway!

Got no real qualms being used as a stepping stone as long as we get a good couple of years from a player and then make a big profit on them if they do “step up” to bigger and better things.

newcastle isn’t a stepping stone, newcastle is the best

I will be more than happy for top quality players like Debuchy to use NUFC as a “STEPPING STONE” and for top quality ex-footballer to help premote our cause!! Because afterall it can only better our club! more the better!! once these players see what NEWCASTLE UNITED have to offer!! they will be overwelmed!! Quality Stadium, Fantastic fans, Huge gates, other quality players and management and staff!! bring it on!!

Not sure how it’s backhanded were like he says a top club with history. were not one of the elite though Barca, Real, AC etc (certain English clubs I’m loath to mention) who consistently pick up trophies in European and domestic competition and that’s probably what he’s referring to. But if we get these players in then maybe we can get up there again and make it last this time.

Any of yee lads wanna buy some charlie?

Remember stepping stones come to an end just as they did for Robert Pires ie: was Arsenal now Walsall

I love Newcastle just as much as the next fan but you need to stop making mountains out of molehills. Fact is, Newcastle is a stepping stone, and until we can regularly challenge for the champions league and trophies, that’s all we can be to players like Debuchy, who are world class.

Also, bear in mind Pires is speaking to a French audience that would only vaguely have heard of Newcastle. Yo can’t expect him to say the usual spiel about how “Newcastle is the best club in the world”, they’d think he’s gone mad!

We are actually one of the best known teams in France due to having plenty of french players over the years and currently having one of France’s most high profile players on the books in Ben Arfa. We also attracted some big TV ratings last season and according to my parisian friend reliably informs me we pushed Arsenal close for amount of live match showings last season.

What did you want him to do… lie?

To be fair we are, but in the next year or 2 we will be as could as Tottenham and Arsenal, and the next 3-5 years will be a team that at least challenge for Champions League and look at Liverpool, many people want to go to them and they are awful
