Newcastle United Find Rough Diamonds In Bargain Basement

Credit where it’s due, when you have players like Cisse and Ben Arfa making all the headlines, it’s possibly very easy to forget that our five game winning run has been achieved by conceding precisely one goal.

It may also be easy to forget that this has been achieved with a back four made up of mainly bargain basement transfers.

For whatever reason, no matter how well the team does, some players will always be deemed as not good enough for the shirt , but credit needs to be given to Simpson, Williamson and Perch.

While our stars do the business at one end, they have done an equally fine job at the other. Now you may well believe that these players (along with Ryan Taylor and Guthrie) are not Champions League standard, and you may well be right, but seeing as the combined transfer fees of these five lads comes to less than the wages we have paid Alan Smith for his services, surely no one can argue that they haven’t  been excellent value for money.

If only for their  commitment to the cause alone,  Danny, Mike and James will do for me any day, instead of the likes of Babayaro, Marcelino and Boumsong.

Spot on mate – neded saying.

The media-driven headlines about our more ‘eye-catching’ (read flair and goalscoring) players like Cisse, Ben Arfa, Cabaye and (previously) Ba – although I’m happy to say more than justified – risk ignoring our outstanding defence this season.

As you say, only one goal conceded in the last five games speaks for itself. Simpson, Williamson and Perch have had a lot of stick on fans forums over the season.

True, they’ve had a few bad games too – who doesn’t in the space of a season? But they’ve all stepped up and performed at their limits. Credit to them. Credit also to Pardew for motivating them to perform so well.

    Value for money? – absolutely
Committed, giving their best every time they play – definitely
Team players, waiting for their chance without bleating – yes

This (plus good management) is what has given us a great season so far – not ‘big name, big wage’ players like we wasted so much of our money of in the past.

If only we’d realised this pre-Owen, Boumsong, Smith, Luque etc.

Here’s to 3 points at Stoke and a great end to the first season for years where we’ve really got something to fight for :-)
