Strange Tale Of Curtis Davies and Steven Taylor

The latest transfer tale to make me puzzled has involved Newcastle United, Curtis Davies and Steven Taylor.

The story that has done the rounds today is that Newcastle are after Hull Captain and centre-back Curtis Davies, with Alan Pardew looking to get ahead of the likes of Sunderland and Everton by offering them £4m and Steven Taylor, rather than the £8m he is supposedly valued at and other clubs would be prepared to pay.

No doubt some of you who aren’t Steven Taylor fans will be wondering how he’s rated at £4m…but I think it is other aspects of the tale that don’t bear much scrutiny.

For starters, Curtis Davies turns 30 during this coming season, so most of us would find it a bit unlikely that Mike Ashley would be prepared to give him the big four or five year deal that he would surely be looking for if he does fancy a move, plus the fact there would be no resale value if the player stayed even a few years.

Also, why would Steve Bruce be happy to lose his most influential player and captain, then be happy to get a cut price replacement in Taylor?

Oh that’s right, it must be because Brucey is such a big Newcastle fan…

Sadly as well, I have to say that at this moment in time I would struggle to convince myself that any player would see themselves having a brighter future at Newcastle rather than Hull. Yet again the only thing we can offer is playing in front of bigger crowds and that advantage appears likely to rapidly diminish as fans call time on the lack of ambition.

Even Alan Pardew has said how he wishes Newcastle could have competed for players like Shane Long and Tom Huddlestone, who ended up at….Hull City.
