What were your Newcastle v Swansea player ratings?

Interesting to get an outside perspective and the industry leader for an independent viewpoint is the whoscored rating system (used by numerous sections of the football industry; including media, bookmakers and clubs themselves).

Over 200 raw statistics are used to calculate the player ratings and are weighted according to influence in the game – taking into account the area of the pitch and its outcome for each important event.

To sum up just how desperate Newcastle United have been in recent times, both as a team and as individuals, the previous three matches ([intlink id=”41766″ type=”post”]Stoke[/intlink], [intlink id=”41492″ type=”post”]Man U[/intlink], [intlink id=”41271″ type=”post”]Southampton[/intlink]) had seen only one United player in each game feature in the top eleven rated players.

Against Swansea I suppose you can say it is progress because Newcastle had a might five in the top ten players and it was a draw between the two clubs for the eleventh spot with both clubs teams having players who scored 6.8.

The bit story though is the identity of the player ranked top of all 27 who took part in Saturday’s match.

Somehow, Shola Ameobi took the honours!

Personally I didn’t think anybody was brilliant on the whole pitch but I did think substitute Mathieu Debuchy was clearly Newcastle’s best player. So how Dummett and especially Gosling are ranked above the French full-back is beyond me.

Likewise, how Gosling is rated above Tiote is baffling – the Ivory Coast midfielder ran himself ragged yet again making up for those alongside him and maybe that is the flaw in the ratings, they don’t properly take into account the off the ball running/work that players do…or don’t. Which could also give us more of an insight into Shola’s bizarre ranking.

While Shola only outscored Wilfried Bony by 8.3 to 8.2, I don’t think anybody at St.James’ Park could be in any doubt as to who the more effective striker was, even ignoring the fact that Bony outscored Shola by two to a very rare one.

8.3 Shola

8.0 Dummett

7.7 Gosling

6.8 Gouffran

6.8 De Jong

6.6 Williamson

6.4 Tiote

6.3 Krul

6.2 Coloccini

6.0 Cisse

5.8 Anita

Subs: Remy 6.2, Armstrong 6.0, Debuchy 7.4
