Are Southampton Any Match For The Magpies?

As we get into the midst of the Premier League, Newcastle fans await our next clash with an enemy far from our homeland – Southampton.

The Toon will go head to head with The Saints on Saturday 13th  September, but hopefully13 will not prove to be the unlucky number as Alan Pardew’s 11 ventures south to St. Mary’s.

If Southampton’s recent transfers are anything to go by, there’s every reason why punters should put their faith in Newcastle with Betsafe. It’s been an unlucky run for the Saints as far as selling players goes; it could be argued that they’ve let go of their best players this season, with a lot of the team off to greener pastures in the form of Liverpool.

The luck of the Saints went from bad to worse as they lost their manager Mauricio Pottechino, who was swiftly replaced by Ronald Koeman. The new manager assured fans that by selling players he would invest in quality replacements, but as yet, it doesn’t appear he has lived up to his word.

World Cup youngster Luke Shaw was the first casualty for the Saints, who was quickly snapped up by Manchester United. Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren both followed, heading north to Liverpool, with Rickie Lambert trailing behind.

Calum Chambers, meanwhile, was signed to Arsenal and is already beginning to prove his worth as a top four Premier League player. As it stands, the only hope for Southampton now is Morgan Schneiderlin, but with rumours of a potential signing with Tottenham, the Saints could soon be out of luck.

While the Saints’ uncertain team may give Newcastle the advantage, it’s important not to overlook the Toon’s newest signings. Siem de Jong, for one, will be a huge asset to the team. His performance during the World Cup has clearly not eluded Pardew, who recently admitted: “Holland’s loss is Newcastle’s gain.”

The attacking midfielder is not the only Dutch talent that Newcastle have poached – Daryl Janmaat, who had an impressive World Cup, has also joined the team. Add that to the striking talents of Rémy Cabella, who scored an impressive 24 goals during his time with Montpellier, and you’ve got yourself the makings of a team full of promise.

The Magpies may have finished badly in the second half of last season, but with fresh new talent and a weakened opponent, their pairing with Southampton can result in victory.
