Robbie Savage ‘It can’t always be about avoiding relegation for Newcastle’
Robbie Savage added his voice to the thousands of Newcastle fans who looked in disbelief at the team put out by John Carver in the FA Cup.
Just like Pardew before him, United’s caretaker manager put out a seriously weakened team against Leicester, missing all of Newcastle’s best players who had played in the previous match against Burnley.
Fabricio Coloccini, Moussa Sissoko, Jack Colback, Daryl Janmaat and Ayoze Perez all missing, leading fans to accuse John Carver of playing the weakened team on Mike Ashley’s instructions, something the stand-in boss was adamant wasn’t the case.
Speaking on Radio Five Live though, Robbie Savage stated that ‘It can’t always be about avoiding Premier League relegation’ for United.
The same sentinent no doubt aired thousands of times by fans since finding out the team selection and then seeing the subsequent result of playing a team that was almost certainly doomed to lose.
Savage called Carver’s team selection a ‘Ridiculous decision’ and it means now that under Mike Ashley, Newcastle have now played fourteen FA Cup matches in his eight years at the club and won only three, never getting past the fourth round.
Robbie Savage;
“For Newcastle, this was the only trophy that they could possibly have won this season.
“If John Carver really wanted the managerial job permanently, why didn’t he play his strongest team today? Ridiculous decision.
“It can’t always be about avoiding Premier League relegation for Newcastle United.”
