Respect

On the five year anniversary of Sir Bobby Robson’s death yesterday, I was sat watching the news and they mentioned the amount of money [intlink id=”45559″ type=”post”](£7.3m) his Foundation has raised[/intlink].

It then came to me in a flash, so I went onto the Daily Mirror Pride of Britain site and nominated Gary Ferguson for a special award.

For those of you who don’t recognise the name, he is the Sunderland supporter who started the memorial fund for John Alder and Liam Sweeny after the MH17 atrocity.

This is what I wrote to the ‘Pride Of Britain’ site;

‘Gary Ferguson, who supports Sunderland, has raised over £30,000 in a very short time for John Alder and Liam Sweeny (NUFC supporters) who were killed in the atrocity of flight MH17.

He has been a huge star and as NUFC  fans we  have nothing but total respect for him, he has crossed the boundary of being our rival, as have thousands of other Sunderland supporters to pay respect to our fallen comrades. Gary only wanted to buy a bouquet of flowers to lay at St James` Park but it escalated and the fund has gone through the roof.

I think you may be aware of the rivalry between the two clubs and it says everything about our region. Football is only a game but we stick together in these sad times. All I can add is that Gary Ferguson deserves recognition for what he has done and above all he has excelled himself in his efforts.’

I only hope that Gary gets some recognition for his efforts and I’d like to think you all feel the same way.

RIP Sir Bobby, John and Liam.

Donations to the memorial fund in John and Liam’s names can still be made HERE, all funds will be split between the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and the Marie Curies Hospice in Newcastle, at the request of the two families.
