Possibly The Worst Newcastle United Transfer Story Of The Year

Against some admittedly stiff competition, it appears we already have a winner of the worst Newcastle United transfer story of the year.

With candidates thrown up every day, it takes something pretty special to stand out from the crowd of players who won’t end up at St.James’ Park any time soon.

The outstanding effort for the award, goes to the Sun On Sunday and their story this weekend.

They claim that Mike Ashley is prepared to buy Bafetimbi Gomis in the January transfer market.

The Swansea striker is reported to have a £7m buyout clause inserted in his contract, after joining the Welsh club for nothing in the summer.

So in which alternative universe can you imagine Mike Ashley paying £7m AND the hefty wages he refused to sanction back in the summer, for the striker Newcastle had pursued for a couple of seasons, but then stepped back from recruiting him when he had a zero transfer fee?

Gomis may not have found a regular space in Swansea’s team, making two Premier League starts and three substitute appearances, but the idea that the forward who turns thirty before next season kicks off, could somehow end up bought by Newcastle in January is surely one of the safest write-offs in history.

Gomis has made two starts in the League Cup and scored one goal in that competition, while in the league he faces stiff competition with the excellent Wilfried Bony ahead of him.

Whether Bafetimbi Gomis would improve Newcastle United’s first eleven is of course a completely different question and one that gets a resounding yes from me, the thought of Papiss Cisse and him up front would give me a little bit of hope of better to come.
