Pardew Wonders What If…Signings Had Been Made Last Summer

Alan Pardew was in no doubt who had been the best player on Sunday but the manager is left wondering what might have been, if signings had been made last summer.

“Taylor and Cabaye were as good as anyone on the pitch, every bit as good as Sissoko and Gouffran.

However, none of them were as good as Debuchy who was by far the best player on the pitch, he was outstanding.

He has been a big signing for and us and I just wish we’d done it in July”.

The fans have come out in complete agreement with our man of the match poll finding that 36% of you made Debuchy our top man, followed in second by Sissoko (20%), Tiote (15%) and Gouffran (10%).

The manager’s comments regarding signings happening earlier, is backed up by the fact that three of the top four rated players against Southampton were January signings.

The squad was patently not strong enough last September and most of us would accept that if Sunday’s match had taken place pre-January signings, then it is pretty certain we wouldn’t be now six points clear of the relegation zone and looking upwards.

I think the extra quality that has come in, has reminded many people of the difference between honest triers and the real level of ability you need to prosper, or even survive, in the Premier League.

Fingers crossed that this lesson has been learnt from the very top of the club downwards.
