Our Man In The Netherlands Brings Latest On PSV Keeper ‘Transfer’

Reports were rife that Newcastle United were last week on the verge of making their first signing of the summer.

Dutch Under 21 keeper Jeroen Zoet was claimed to be due to sign any minute but as it stands, still no first summer signing.

PSV’s Jeroen Zoet

Only one thing to do, we asked our man in the Netherlands, ex-pat Paul Benneworth, to investigate.

With Jeroen Zoet, I think there is little chance of a deal.  The Telegraaf seems to have suggested that PSV are expecting and would take a bid of £5m to prise him away, whilst at the same time, there is also the rumour that Heurelho Gomez would move from Spurs, where he is getting no playing time, to PSV, where he had a very successful four years.

Transfermarkt suggests that the market value of Zoet is £1.8m and the word that keeps cropping up on the message boards is hype. There’s enough comments along the lines of willing to cash in for the five million that suggest he is not quite the marvel that would demand that price tag.

It also seems to go against PSV’s stated long-term plan, to build up a new squad of locally produced players rather than buying in ageing stars.  Zoet fits with the plan for local talent and so it is going to have to be a high bid to dislodge him.

What we expect of Ashley is that he’s not going to throw money away and it would be extremely unlikely that he would come up with the asking price.  He seems like a canny and promising player, and he could well be an ideal replacement for Krul if he leaves, but the issue is he is still unproven at the top level and there is really the risk of the hype factor.

The one upside is that he was part of a low budget squad that massively overperformed in the last two seasons on loan at RKC Waalwijk.  The Dutch Wikipedia specifically names him as being an important factor in their qualification for European play-offs, although not the EL itself, in 2012.

So he might fit well in the Newcastle side because that suggests he is good at stopping goals – with just 49 goals from 34 games, his 1.44 goals conceded per game puts him alongside other quality keepers for the 2011-12 season. With fewer games, he kept to 1.37 goals in 2012-13 as well.

The winner in this rumour seems to be Gomes and possibly PSV if they can bid up the price. However, at this point, PSV need players for the Champions League qualifiers and they have already made a few sales at very good prices over the Summer, so arguably the money is not so important to them.
