Newcastle United – From Calamity To Hope?

After our calamitous second half of last season which culminated in heavy defeats to Everton, Spurs, Sunderland and Manchester United, there is now renewed optimism the club’s transfer activity might herald brighter times ahead.

With the signing of the highly rated Remy Cabella and Siem De Jong, plus the addition of Jack Colback from Sunderland and Emmanuel Riviere, as well as Daryl Janmaat and Ayose Perez. There have also been claims that our spending might not be finished yet.

When the final whistle blew on the final home match of last season on May the 3rd, over 60% of the crowd were gone; disillusioned, disaffected and hugely disappointed by a season which promised much but in the end failed to deliver.

This time, the new season promises a lot more, with a new start and an opportunity to have a run in either the FA or Capital One Cup.

Our youth team also proves to be producing some great talent with Adam Armstrong, Lubomir Satka and Rolando Aarons having good pre-seasons and Alex Gillead and Haris Vuckic contributing well. After last pre-season where there was just one loan signing and the recruitment of Oliver Kemen, these signings are a statement of intent from the board that we want to improve upon our 10th place position last season.

If Riviere can start well and Cabella, De Jong and Colback can contribute in terms of goals and assists, a finish in the top 8 could be a realistic proposition. With Facundo Ferreyra in one loan and the two Forest lads hopefully signed for long-term, maybe there are reasons to be cheerful after all.

I would also like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to Liam Sweeney and John Alder, two great men who shared our love for Newcastle United. Their passion for the club and for football was unmatched. My thoughts are with their family and friends at this difficult time. They will be sorely missed and the tributes made by Alan Pardew, Fabricio Coloccini and the club overall were very fitting and a nice gesture.
