Newcastle Back In For Clement Grenier After Remy Cabella Farce

With the farcical situation over Remy Cabella continuing [intlink id=”43873″ type=”post”]between Montpellier President Louis Nicollin and Mike Ashley[/intlink], over in France it is claimed that Newcastle are now switching their attention back to Clement Grenier.

Grenier’s agent confirmed back in January that Newcastle had made a bid and now it is reported that United are back in for the player, though the number of clubs now taking an active interest is growing by the day, with Everton, Southampton and Bayer Leverkusen all involved.

Grenier has missed the World Cup due to a recurring groin problem and ironically, not wanting to disrupt his World Cup preparations was one of the reasons the player’s agent put forward for Grenier not moving to Newcastle in January.

Another reason at the time was the playmaker’s belief in his manager  but with Remi Garde leaving Lyon this summer, that is an obstacle also removed.

With Montpellier describing Mike Ashley’s offer for Remy Cabella as insulting, a third obstacle may be harder to overcome.

In January, Frederic Guerra (Grenier’s agent), indicated that Newcastle had bid less than £10m for Clement Grenier and stated that this was the biggest barrier to any transfer, the difference in valuations.

With competition from other clubs and Ashley’s reluctance to bite the bullet in paying the going price for real quality, the prospects look about as good as those surrounding Remy Cabella.

The only positive appears to be that Lyon are said to be desperate to sell because of their financial situation but with other clubs involved there is no chance of Ashley playing hardball, and winning, on this one.

This is part of what Guerra had to say back in January (to read all go [intlink id=”39156″ type=”post”]HERE[/intlink]);

“It is not easy to say no to a big club like Newcastle, but Clement has finally decided to stay in Lyon. Today, with the new football system developed by Rémi  Garde, Clement is now demonstrating that there is even more ability in his game, he is proving it every match.

“With six months to the World Cup, would a last minute departure at the end of the transfer window be a good option?

“However, as an agent of  Clement Grenier, I also have to ask myself: ‘Is Clément really worth half the value of  Yohan Cabaye?’

Beyond all the reasons that led us to decline the offer of Newcastle, the conditions of the deal did not seem fair to me with regards to Clement.”
